The evolution of photosynthesis and chloroplasts
نویسنده
چکیده
Photosynthesis has provided life-energy for the biosphere during most of earth’s history. It provides us with all our food and fuel for our vehicles, and much of our building materials and other commodities. When our society now faces the big energy crisis, this ancient process may come to our rescue, both in the form of biofuel produced by plants and in novel, technologically modified versions. Current Science has begun the publication of a series of articles on the theme of ‘Photosynthesis and the Global Issues’. Those who would solve the energy crisis would need information on all aspects of the process of photosynthesis. In this first review article, Lars Olof Björn (Sweden) and Govindjee (USA) discuss the very first theme: the evolution of photosynthesis and the chloroplasts.

Photosynthesis by intact isolated chloroplasts on solid support.
A new approach to measurements of photosynthesis by isolated chloroplasts has been devised. Intact isolated chloroplasts were trapped in the cavities of membrane filters. The thin layers of chloroplasts so obtained were assayed for O(2) evolution and CO(2) assimilation in leaf-chambers. Photosynthetic gas exchange could be demonstrated to take place either in a closed or a flow-through system. ...
متن کاملOXYGEN EVOLUTION IN PHOTOSYNTHESIS 683 Chloride Requirement for Oxygen Evolution in Photosynthesis
The role of chloride in photosynthetic oxygen evolution was reinvestigated by determining the effect of this ion on photochemical reactions of chloroplasts in which oxygen either is or is not produced. The chloroplasts used were isolated from normal spinach leaves. The level of chloride in the reaction mixture was controlled by washing the isolated chloroplasts and by avoiding a chloride contam...
متن کاملOxygen Concentration in Isolated Chloroplasts during Photosynthesis.
The O(2) concentration in intact and osmotically disrupted isolated spinach (Spinacia oleracea, L.) chloroplasts during photosynthesis was estimated. The chloroplasts were allowed to reduce 3-phosphoglycerate, CO(2), or ferricyanide in light until the rate of O(2) production was linear. When the light was turned off O(2) evolution from the chloroplasts continued for a few seconds. This prolonge...
متن کاملInhibition of photosynthesis by azide and cyanide and the role of oxygen in photosynthesis.
Cyanide and azide inhibit photosynthesis and catalase activity of isolated, intact spinach (Spinacia oleracea) chloroplasts. When chloroplasts are illuminated in the presence of CN(-) or N(3) (-), accumulation of H(2)O(2) is observed, parallel to inhibition of photosynthesis. Photosynthetic O(2) evolution is inhibited to the same extent, under saturating light, whether CO(2) or phosphoglycerate...
متن کاملEvolution of Photosynthesis
Photosynthesis is the conversion of radiant energy, as light, into stored chemical energy. The central process is a light-driven separation of electrical charge across a biological membrane. Photochemical reaction centres carry out this process, and their three-dimensional protein structures now indicate that all modern reaction centres are homologous. Reaction centres with light-harvesting com...
